Using the app

How do the five boxes work?

Every word starts in box 1. Answer it correctly and it moves up a box and waits longer before it comes back; get it wrong and it drops to box 1 again. Words in boxes 3, 4 and 5 count as mastered. Answering a box 5 card correctly retires it — it stays mastered and stops coming back.

I tapped the wrong button.

Shake the phone, or tap the undo arrow at the top left of the card. Either one takes back the last answer.

Can I answer without the buttons?

Swipe the card right for correct, left for wrong. Tap it to flip it over.

The German voice sounds robotic.

iOS ships a basic German voice and downloads better ones on request. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → German and install a Premium or Enhanced voice. WordLern picks the best one installed, so it will be used the next time you tap the speaker.

Why is there only one English meaning per word?

Because a card with five glosses on it teaches none of them. Each word was given the sense that carries it in everyday German, and the example sentence shows that sense in use.

Widgets and reminders

My widget is showing old numbers.

The widget updates when you finish a session, and iOS decides when to redraw it after that — sometimes a few minutes later. Opening the app refreshes it. If it still looks stuck, remove the widget and add it again.

When does the reminder arrive?

At the moment your next card is due, not at a fixed hour. If you have nothing due, you get nothing. There is no toggle inside the app — iOS Settings → Notifications → WordLern is the off switch.

Your data

Where is my progress stored?

On your device only. There is no account and no sync, which also means progress does not move to a new phone on its own. See the privacy page.

My progress disappeared after updating to 2.0.

Version 2.0 replaced the entire word list — new words, new meanings, example sentences on all 1000 — so the old boxes no longer referred to anything that still exists and were cleared. It happens once. Nothing you do from 2.0 onwards resets.

How do I delete everything?

Delete the app. Everything WordLern stored goes with it.

Something is broken

Email mfsaglam1@icloud.com with your iOS version, your device, and what you were doing. A wrong translation or a bad example sentence is worth reporting too — the word list is hand-edited and corrections get into the next release.
